Motherwort is an unusual plant, In addition to a distinctive stem--quadrangular, grooved, hollow, often red-violet, and usually hairy--it boasts dark green leaves, small red flowers, triangular brown fruit crowned with a tuft of hair, and an unpleasant smell. Originating in central Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and central Asia, it is now established in North America.The plant has a mildly relaxing effect on the heart, and acts as a sedative. Motherwort is also used as a remedy for hyperthyroid conditions, gas, Irregular heartbeat and Weak heart although its effectiveness for such problems remains unverified.
