From its origin in central Asia, Hollyhock has spread around the world. The plant is a tall ornamental that every two years produces showy groups of blood-red or purple flowers up to 4 inches in diameter. It's the dark purple blossoms that are considered medicinal. They have been used as a healing herb since at least the Middle Ages.
Historically Malva Flower has been used for bronchitis, cough, indigestion, fever, sore throat, kidney inflammation, and menstrual problems. Applied externally, it's used as a treatment for skin inflammation and ulcers.
