Hyssop is among the oldest of medicinal herbs. Its healing powers are extolled in the Bible--"Purge me with Hyssop and I shall be clean"--and its name is derived from the ancient Greek for "holy herb."
A 2-foot high evergreen shrub with dark blue flowers, Hyssop grows naturally throughout the Mediterranean region, and is cultivated elsewhere. The plant's medicinal value lies in its above-ground parts, as well as its essential oil. Hyssop is used as a treatment for fevers, respiratory ailments, intestinal inflammation, liver complaints, gallbladder problems, and poor circulation. For none of these disorders, however, has it been proven effective.
