This exotic herb from the Amazon basin depends on plain old caffeine for its stimulating action. Among caffeine's many effects are a tendency to strengthen and speed up the heartbeat, relax blood vessels (except for those in the brain), and open bronchial tubes. Caffeine also discourages blood clots, stimulates the urinary system, and promotes production of digestive juices. Guarana is an evergreen vine growing up to 30 feet long in the Amazon rain forest. Much like coffee beans, its seeds are peeled, dried, roasted, ground, and made into beverages. In Brazil, a fermented mixture of Guarana, cassava, and water has become a popular national drink.
