The plant grows wild throughout most of Europe and much of Asia. It has spread to the mountains of northern Africa and has been introduced into North America. It has a slimy-sweet taste and gives off the smell of honey when the leaves are rubbed. Coltsfoot is used as a respiratory disinfectant, expectorant, and cough suppressant. Since the days of ancient Greece and Rome, coltsfoot has been used to relieve asthma, coughs and bronchial congestion. Keeping a bottle of coltsfoot on hand is a good practice for those winter coughs and colds that are bound to come.
